Chilla (Persian/Urdu: چله‎, derived from Chehel چهل meaning 'forty' in Persian) is a practice involving withdrawal (‘uzla) from ordinary social interaction for the purpose of dedicating oneself wholly to spiritual exercises and ascetical disciplines. The most common regimen involves a period of forty days of intensified prayer, fasting, and consultation with one’s sheikh. The Chilla-e-Makoos is a more extreme form of chilla which involves suspending oneself upside down in a well.
